Sebring II Kit Car for sculpture majors
A search for convertible sports cars has lead me to my favorite part of craigslist, cheap sports cars that nobody wants! I have a spot in my heart for the kit car. I don’t think I have ever seen one in real life that was done that well . But I think everyone who ever embarks on the kit quest must think to themselves, “I (alone) will be the one who finally does it right!”. The VW based cars are low on my list because I am not really an “airhead” I respect the classic VW scene and the engineering but I am just not a big fan of Mr.Ferdinand.
BUT! they do have a great aftermarket, are super duper easy to work on. They work in an independent reality to automotive convention in a way that I think artists often synch well with. They are very clever and extremely simple. This 1980 Sterling II kit car is too cool. Lift off window/cockpit!, swooping lines, low slung. But they always look like this when you see them for sale. What keeps kit cars from shining are their interiors. They always look like an afterthought. But if you passed a sculpture (sculpture 2 maybe) or materials class at any overpriced arts program, you could put this thing together. Put that 3 years of working for that mid-courier minimalist sculpture to good use!
Id love to restore one of these. Next on the list??? I would put a subaru motor in it. Fix up the suspension and make it sound and drive less like a beatle. Lower it. Clean the fiberglass and give it a slick paint job. Id probably make it look like a set from my Wing Commander/Barbarella slashfiction short film that stalled when we could not reach our kickstarts goal.
